My fingers and toes are cold. I just went out to feed the birds. It's still very cold -- it was well below 0F when DB went out to the bus this morning, and it was still only one-hand single digits above zero at 0900. There's three-eighths of an inch of hoarfrost on everything right now -- it's very pretty. The cardinals are especially pretty, standing out against the white rime on everything. If the sun was out, it'd be even prettier, but I suppose that might be asking too much.

There's just enough of a hard surface on the snow to make it hard for the dog -- she puts her paw down and it feels firm so she puts her weight on it...and breaks through into the softer stuff underneath. She didn't have that problem with the last storm -- the drifts were packed hard enough that it wasn't really soft underneath....

The house finches are beginning to show their summer colors, so we're nearing the end of winter. In other bird news, there was a northern flicker at the birdfeeder Monday morning.

because I want to keep track of this.

Today the red-winged blackbirds showed up. There were none yesterday, and this morning there are a couple dozen in the yard. Hrm. that may not be quite true -- when we got home from church yesterday there were a flock of black birds in the front yard, but I assumed they were starlings. The birds today are definitely red-winged blackbirds.

Had a PT evaluation today, to determine whether we should ask the doc for another 3-4 weeks of PT. The answer to that is yes, because this course of treatment actually seems to be helping. It's very slow going, and I still have to be ridiculously careful with foot and ankle positioning. The dog does not help with that, as she's consistently wanting to go through the door in the den just *after* I get settled. And I can't really do anything in the sewing room, which is past annoying. And ironing hurts. :(

I was all set to spend the afternoon doing layout (a couple of newsletters and a flyer), but it turns out that there was very little to do. The flyer needed a little bit of tweaking and proofing, and I've got less than half the stuff I need for the newsletters. So I did laundry, knitted, and played games instead.

Annabelle has been "lurking" at Ji lately -- it's highly amusing to watch her hunker down whenever he turns away and when he turns back she sits up, as though she was just sitting there.

There were a dozen doves in the backyard this morning, four cardinals (2 boys, 2 girls), five or six bluejays, and uncountable "mixed small birds". And a couple of crows at the birdbath -- they're so big that there can really only be one on the bath at a time, and the other one was waiting its turn on top of the house feeder about 10 feet away.

Snerk. I heard the cranes whirring this morning, and looked out to see that they were poking around in the garden (they really like gleaning the corn), and Ji was over by the pond, slinking about and appearing to be trying to decide whether he wanted to get closer to them. Then the big crane saw him, and whirred at him. Ji started slinking toward the house. Then I tapped on the door, and he came trotting toward the door. And pranced in as though coming back inside was his idea, and had nothing to do with the trio of cranes.

New birds:
- three bluebirds (two male, one female. there's probably another female around, but I haven't seen her yet.)
- red-winged blackbirds (much preferable to the starlings and cowbirds)
- DB said he saw a robin in the front yard yesterday

New grow-y things:
- purple crocus buds
- snowdrop buds
- "blue eyed grass"
- peony sprouts in the east flowerbed
- multiple instances of tulip/daffodil stems

In the morning, we often have three or four dozen "mixed small birds"* at or under the the feeders or in the rose, plus either a dozen doves or three blue jays. And the occasional squirrel. This afternoon, I looked out and there were only two critters that I could see. The hawk who hunts our backyard was nestled into the (otherwise vacant) rosebush, looking at the birdfeeder. Which was occupied by the big squirrel, who is *big* (body is about 12"). The squirrel was apparently unconcerned, feeling that he was too large for the hawk to try for. The hawk agreed, and eventually flew off to the brush pile.

(* mixed small birds = some combination of gold- and house- finches, four or five species of sparrows, tufted titmice, chickadees, and juncos.)

There's a flock of sparrows and finches bouncing around on the deck and deck rail, looking for the birdseed that's usually there. Sorry guys, it's all gone. I think most of it blew off the platform, rather than getting eaten, so there's probably quite a bit buried in the snow, and they're certainly looking for it. And both cats are watching intently.

Currently there's about 2 inches of snow on the ground, for all that it's been snowing since 7am here. And there's a layer of really wet stuff just at the pavement/snow interface which makes it fairly slippery.

Just got a call from the bell choir director -- there's no rehearsal today, as the snow is expected to continue, and many of the choir members live on roads that won't be plowed until tomorrow. :) (not that we'll be plowed out before then, but we live close enough that I can walk.) And I missed FCB rehearsal last night -- I had sent Esme in for a couple of nit-picky things that finally torqued me off enough to *do* something about, and the repairs weren't done in time.... ooops.

Off to bake -- need lunch box cookies and bread. Of course, there's a very good chance that DB won't have school tomorrow, but if I assume that I won't need cookies/bread in the morning, there will be school, and we won't have any. I need them for lunch tomorrow anyway, so might as well do it now and not worry about it.

We're back! Between the game running long (TWO! overtimes), and the wait for the cheerleaders and athletic department staff to clear security (band? football team? coaching staff? done and through. cheerleaders? staff? not so much.) and deicing (yes, in Mobile), they didn't take off until nearly 3ayem est, and landed at 0515. (got a text from SR while I was on the road.) I got to campus about 0530, parked in the lot where they were going to debark, curled up under a blankie and went back to sleep. :) 90 minutes later, I get a call from an obviously just-woken up SR "we're here. my bus is in front of the building, getting band luggage that had been on the football bus, will be around the side shortly." So I went and held the door for the unloading crew, snagging her bag as it went by, and waited for her to show up.

We got home about 0930. She ate a bowl of cereal and went to bed. She's still sleeping.

I fed the birds and the fish, then took a nap myself -- I'm getting old and creaky, and 3.5 hours of sleep, 90 minutes of it in the car, just isn't enough anymore. I'm glad the snow held off until we got home -- a couple of patches of freezing mist, but not much effect on the roads. It's now snowing fairly hard, but there's no wind, and the birds are settling in close to the food-- the rose bush is full of sparrows and finches and juncos, blackbirds and doves in the boxelder, and jays and cardinals out in the woods' edge. And there's a pair of Northern Flickers around here somewhere -- they just flew off from the suet cake.
