And a glorious day it was, too. high 70s, sunny, enough breeze to keep the bugs down but not enough to blow music around. I was unhappy with the amount of flailing I did, though. Not nearly well enough rehearsed on a few pieces (as in, I'd sight-read it once, six weeks ago). In my defense, I was v. tired. A 6am MRI will seriously mess up one's day. (I skipped the brass+friends picnic after the concert because I just wanted to go home and go to sleep.) Next week should be better, as I don't have to get up before dawn....

And the black cat is being a pain -- J is off at the Annual Picnic, and I am not him, and he's supposed to get a pill twice a day. Riiiiight. That's going to go well.

We had a thunderstorm come through yesterday afternoon. over half an inch of rain in about 20 minutes, then another quarter of an inch at a much slower pace. It was preceded by some gusty winds that blew open the deck box that we keep the furniture cushions in. So not only did the cushions get rained on, they sat in water for an hour or so, until the rain stopped and I could go out and dump the water out of the box. Today is nice and sunny, so all the cushions are deployed and drying.

Because of yesterday's rain, I was able to get into a garden and do some actual weeding, rather than just having the weeds break off at ground level. That garden looks much better now, except now you can see the holes where J dug out trees for transplanting. He did no remediation on the holes.... the garden looks like a dog was chasing a squirrel through it.

(one of the three gigs last week was an indoor gig, so doesn't go on the summer record.)

Monday was FCB outreach. Concert went well, appreciative audience; many on their own balconies or even inside with open patio doors. It was a bit warm, but it wasn't humid, so it was pretty OK. The extra chair and stand I carry came in handy - the extra euph player that DC recruited didn't bring theirs....

Tuesday was LCCB in Howell. There was some concern that we wouldn't actually play, but the storms went through earlier in the afternoon, and had cleared the area by 5:30. There were some ominous clouds, and a few people got a few drops of rain on them, but it did not actually rain. There were a lot of people at the concert -- DM got to 100 and stopped counting.... That concert also went pretty well, by LCCB standards. I flailed a bit more at the marches than I usually do, but I blame that on tired music brain. (The TSax parts in marches are much different than BSax parts, and I'm still wrapping my brain around that.)

Thursday I worked a funeral meal at a church not my own. Which is both easier and harder than working SEMGS wakes, because I wasn't 'in charge'. (I used to be, until the chair of the memorial committee decided that I was cherry-picking because I declined hosting a funeral meal that she didn't want to host because "I work full-time". And what part of "I'm going to be out of town for a week without phone or email until the day before" makes you think that I can do it?) With bonus song leading, because Pastor saw me and said "Make sure you have all the music, I need strong singers." No Amazing Grace, thank Ghu. (He Leadeth Me, In the Garden, Hymn of Promise; and a bonus three-fold Amen at the end. A Capella, because the piano player didn't have music.) DS and I led the songs from the back of the congregation, because there was no way I was going to stand in front and lead unless specifically asked to do so. Strong voices from the back is just fine for a funeral. (DS is one of the other songleaders at church; the funeral was for the eldest child of the third.)

The HodgePodge band (they wanted to call us the Amalgamated Band, but the 'bones insisted) gig on Wednesday was... fine.... DM was not wrong, when he said that LCCB people would have no trouble sight reading. The TSax next to me missed key changes nearly every time, and sometimes didn't even *start* in the right key. Entrances were sloppy, etc. And we were very uncertain of balance and layout, so it took a few pieces to get the "listening across the band" figured out. The layout was just plain odd, which didn't help. But it was a nice evening in the park. There is much I could say about the BA and TH bands, but will limit myself to "they mean well" (my kids played in better bands in 8th grade). DM often tells Livingston that we "sight read better than some bands perform", and TH/BA are probably the kinds of bands he's talking about.

(J and I just looked at each other when one of the TH clarinet players (who has just started playing with FCB this summer) said that DM was as demanding as DC. erm, no. Even in summer, DC expects a much higher level of execution than DM. And the audience can tell. J said that he's gotten so used to the FCB that he had to re-calibrate his expectations as audience when HodgePodge hit their first note. If he expected FCB quality music, he'd have been very disappointed. He has to do that when he comes to LCCB concerts as well, although LCCB has been getting better.)

I went into the office yesterday to touch my BoE and QVF accounts so they don't get disabled for inactivity. We also: ordered the Ballot Drop Box (ideally to arrive for the probable November election); noted that the current township drop box needs to be repainted and a new sign; found the whiteboard (and markers!) that used to be in the boardroom so that they don't need to buy a new one; did some random sorting in the process of finding the whiteboard. (MR and I had found the whiteboard last fall when we were sorting out the storage spaces, but we had either misremembered where it was or someone moved it. Either is possible, but we *did* find it.)

Today, I get to weed! The rain has soaked in enough that the weeds will pull out rather than breaking off at the surface. I don't think I'll be able to finish even one garden, but I need to at least start...

The musicians won this week's matches, although both were close to cancellation due to air quality concerns. Both bands sent out emails saying 'concert is not cancelled. if you would be adversely affected by the poor air quality, please do not come. We will miss you, but your health is more important.' Tuesday evening, in Hamburg, I wore a KN94mask before and after the concert. (they tell us that anything less is pretty much physically unhelpful, but I have a pretty decent stash of 94s.) Wednesday evening we were on an island in the river, and the air quality was better, so I skipped the mask.

Next week there's only one match. But there are three the following week, to balance it out.

I really debated wearing a mask today when I was in AA, but decided that I wasn't going to be outside that long and I could deal with it. This may not have been the best decision, as I can still taste smoke.... (I had to take the Camry in to get two(!) brand new windshield chips/stars sealed before they spread.)

On my way home from AA, I could almost see the smoke & haze rolling in. J has wandered off to the "street festival" in chelsea this evening -- it's all been moved indoors if possible or cancelled if it can't be moved. In addition to the poor air quality, there's a decent chance of storms, and they don't want people outside in lightning storms....

Two weeks into the summer performance season, and we're at 1-2. (technically, 1-3, but I'll go into that later)

Tuesday's LCCB gig was cancelled late (5pm-ish) because the rain was being very spotty and inconsistent. It was also chilly (69 at 5pm, cloudy, and going to get cooler as the night went on), and Prez decided that there wouldn't be enough audience to make it worth playing. There is no rain date for this gig -- it's the second one in Brighton on the summer, and the LCCB is booked through August.

Thursday's FCB gig was cancelled well before noon, as there were storms predicted for the evening, and after the storms it was going to be chilly (predictions were saying ~65 at the end of the concert), so the decision was made to postpone/cancel. That one may be rescheduled, it may not -- we shall see.

The other cancelled gig was an LCCB performance at the SLyon Kite festival, which was cancelled because the kite festival unilaterally changed the performance time from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning. Prez says "erm, no. Many of my people play/sing at church, and they will skip a 10am performance."

The one gig I have played so far is a LCCB gig in Brighton. The weather was gorgeous, the setting a bit dusty (they're rebuilding Main Street in Brighton, and the bandshell is on that side of the park, and with the little rain we'd gotten the previous month...). The concert went well, and despite the construction there was a decent audience. Next week, the LCCB is in Fowlerville.

I may have the Camry back by then! I talked to the service advisor a couple of days ago and she said it was 'in reassembly. should be ready on Monday'. We shall see.....

Oh, right. Sunday was the LCCB spring concert. Entitled "Gags and Gimmicks", there was a surprising amount of good music in there. (Often, "funny" themed concerts are full of stupid things and simple music.) We did Typewriter, Grand Serenade for An Awful Lot of Winds & Percussion, Midnight Fire Alarm, Pie in the Face Polka (henry mancini), What's Up at the Symphony (Looney Tunes music) and a couple of other things I'm forgetting; and two encores, the second of which was subtitled "musician's strike", and when the notes ran out on your part, you were supposed to walk off stage. There was a certain amount of schtick involved in the concert, as you might expect, but I think we followed Mikey's* rules for Pep Band pretty well (play well, have fun, *look* like you're having fun). I was very tired when I got home after the concert.

Monday I worked 10-6:30p, getting the township hall set up for the election on Tuesday. I got to be IT minion for a bit, as well as a lot of "here, move this" "this other thing goes here" "make sure that this *other* thing is done". (I skipped FCB rehearsal, emailing people on Sunday saying "not happening. There are going to be too many roads closed between here and there." Even leaving work at 5, I would have been hard pressed to make it to a 7:30 rehearsal, much less a 6:30 set-up, because I needed to stop by home and get my gear for rehearsal and feed the cats.) The IT guy says he wants to get me familiarized with some of the setup stuff that he does, just so there are two people who know how to do it. whee? (competency rears its ugly head, right?)

Then Tuesday was the election. They'd decided that the AV board didn't need to show up until noon, as there were just barely 500 ballots to process. Which was nice, because I got to rest a little bit. My back and right leg are still not at all happy with all the standing/moving things/walking I've been doing since last Thursday anyway, and then there's the bruising from the accident.... Didn't get out of the hall until 10 pm, due in part to people telling me "oh, X doesn't go there", putting it somewhere else, and then finding out 30 minutes later that, yes, X *does* go there and then they have to figure out where they put it.

J got home from his bike trip on Monday with a lovely cold picked up somewhere along the route. (COVID test negative.) He's actually been sleeping upstairs in the guest room. (Usually when he's sick *I'm* the one sleeping up there, so this is kinda nice. :) )

My alarm went off at 7am, and I looked at it, said "my 8am appointment is at 3:30 this week" and rolled over and went back to sleep. The cats were annoyed, as they're used to getting noms sometime between 7:30 and 8am. They do seem to have gotten over it, at least a little.

ETA: [insurance company] just called, and the Camry is at the repair shop. She said I should hear from them later today or tomorrow with a timeframe for repair. so that's progressing.

[* Mikey was the Michigan Tech Pep Band director when I played there.]

It snowed on Friday, as it has the last few weekends. Not enough to cause even weakened branches to fall, but still a couple of inches, and then it snowed, gently, all day Monday for another 3 inches. I think we got more snow in March than we did in December and January combined.

In work news, we're processing lots of applications. Print flow is awkward and a bit convoluted, but I can print specialty cards from my computer, so that's done. (local IT says he wants to poke at things some time when we're both not busy (ha!), and see if he can set up my computer just like DCs -- there's some weirdity in the interface between program and print driver, and he can't tell if it's firmware or software without looking at it.)

New music in LCCB (that was last week, but that was only a read-thru); new BSax player showed up. Still uncertain whether I'll be playing tenor or bari in the summer band - new guy may swap instead. Not my problem, tbh - section leader tells me which horn to bring and I play it. :)

Stage rehearsal for FCB tomorrow night, concert on Sunday - it's a tech-heavy program, and there are people in the band dealing with that. I "just" have to do set-up. Piano! and projection screen! and different stage! whee!!! J will be coming to the stage rehearsal to work on his setup as well. They tell us that they've already sold a couple hundred tickets to the concert! (It's listed on the composer's website, and a link to the venue, so I bet that most tickets are being sold through that.)

(Happy St Urho's Day! Need to find a purple shirt for work today.)
jennlk: (Default)
Next time for sure! But I did get keys, and there is a call in to the security provider to get me a code for the alarm system. And I'm listed on the internal employee/staff list (mailing address is wrong, and it has a personal email address rather than the work one, but I'm on the list!).

Farmington band has been much more freeform than usual, and it's weirding me out. We've had only two rehearsals this month anyway (legal/school holiday one Monday), and both of them have been short. Maestro planned on doing a piece this week, but only about a third of the band actually had copies, because the music team had collected originals after the last rehearsal and were supposed to copy them and distribute copies, but didn't. And then there's the music that was put in the folder in September and about a third of the band turned it in in December because they didn't read the Keep This Music list correctly. sigh.

Perhaps to keep things balanced, Livingston has been more difficult than usual. It's a very ambitious program, and I've been doing more flailing than I usually do in that band. We're down to two saxes (plus a tenor when she doesn't have a contra-alto clarinet part), so I've got some 2nd alto music in my folder as well as some 2nd bassoon parts. Yesterday I was playing Bass Clarinet cues off the 2nd Bassoon part -- it's been a few years since I transposed on the fly, and I messed up.

And today it snows.

It's been a busy couple of days. Two evenings of sight reading, and a day of training (with more to follow). My brain is a bit more pudding-like than usual.

There's starting to be crossover in music between the two bands -- LCCB handed out three pieces of music I've played with Farmington and a different arrangement of a piece that Farmington is working on for March. *That's* gonna be a bit tricky to deal with -- I *think* it'll be easier than playing the same arrangement in each band, but we'll just have to see.

IT got me an email address at work, and tomorrow I'll probably get a computer and a login. They're slowly moving me past "filing/data entry clerk" (which, to be fair, is all they really *needed* for a while. now that the filing/sorting has been dealt with, there's time to get me setup and trained up for other things.) Up next, training on the voter software and the (new to everyone!) accounting software.

The black cat has been very vocal in his displeasure lately - he really wants to "go outside", but he wants a nice outside, not the cold/damp/often snowy outside we've had lately.
jennlk: (Umbrella)
Tonight's concert in Fowlerville was cancelled due to "unstable" weather. By which they mean "it might rain, it might not, and there's no way of knowing which cloud is going to dump on you", if the weather pattern at my house is any indication..... Three rain bearing clouds, one with rumbles of thunder, went over while I was weeding without a drop of rain falling; and then a much lighter colored cloud dumped a soaking rain on me with no warning. That's really bad weather for an outdoor concert - no time to cover music or instruments.

Last night's FCB rehearsal was cut short because of the heavy overcast -- it got dark early. And it was *almost* raining - low brass had water droplets forming on their horns, and some people's music got damp, but it never really rained.
jennlk: (Default)
The Livingston band concert last week was not rained out, or even on. The director started the concert early because the clouds looked a bit threatening, but although there were two or three rain-bearing clouds that went directly over us, none of them actually dropped any rain.

The record keeping for this summer is complicated by the fact that the bands are rehearsing outside as well.... I'm not sure how to score rehearsals. FCB does not have rehearsal this evening; Livingston has a concert scheduled for Tuesday, but the weather peeps are saying it may rain.

Pro Tip - when playing saxophone outdoors on consecutive days in the summer, have an extra neck strap. Tuesday I put on the neckstrap I used on Monday, and it was sticky and damp and a bit icky feeling. But I have an extra....

The gardens have dried out enough that I've been able to get out and pull weeds. I've been filling the garden cart at least once a day. We discovered a few really big ant hills in the garden. The neighbors are spraying for ants (have a 'biological' theoretically safe for bees and pollinators service coming in), and I suspect that ants are all coming over to our place. I don't mind a few ants, but when the anthill is a over a foot in diameter and 8" tall.... We got some ant killer and have spread it.

I finally got J to move the pavers and retaining wall blocks out of the space behind the rill so I could get in there and pull the weeds and grass that have grown over the last year. I think I'll plant some black-eyed susan there, or something of that ilk. But not until next year, when I see if any of the spring bulbs that were there survived last year's rill reconstruction.

Blargh.

Thanksgiving dinner was quiet. I fumbled timing a bit -- not entirely my fault, I don't think. My suspicion is that the new microwave is not quite as powerful as the old one, and cooking just takes longer in it. But it was done, and the rolls hadn't cooled off, so that was good.

Yesterday's FCB rehearsal was cancelled on account of somebody thought it would be fun to threaten the school and the police closed the building to evening activities. And we have a concert in less than two weeks. Ah well, being under-rehearsed just enhances concentration, right?

Tonight is the last LCCB rehearsal for the year - concert is this weekend. I need to go make my holiday accent - uniform is concert blacks with a 'festive' scarf or tie. I don't do loose scarves as a general rule, and certainly not with a bari sax hanging around my neck, so I'm making a red cowl. My partner in the bari sax section will be missing the February LCCB concert - something about an anniversary trip to Barbados.

Most of the holiday weekend storm missed us. We got high winds on Wednesday, and some rain on Saturday, but no wintry mix or snow. We got a slight dusting of snow Sunday night, but five miles away in town they didn't even get that. No sun, and not above freezing yesterday, so the snow is still on the grass but gone off the paving.

I need to do the holiday baking, especially since most of it is being sent off to points south (Mum + AC get a box, and EU gets a box). I'll be stuck home on Thursday while my car is in the shop, so I think that's what I'll do then.

DB saw sandhill cranes in the backyard. He says they were dancing and warbling at each other a lot.

I did not see them, as I was not home during the daylight -- wait, that's not quite true. The sun was completely up (barely) when I left at 0730, and had not gone down when I returned at 1745. I still didn't see the cranes, but I'm sure I will see them tomorrow.

I was off being helpful at the high school for MSBOA festival. This year's event was mostly middle school groups, with Detroit Catholic Central and Chelsea being the only HS groups on the program. Some of the 7th grade bands are very bad, others are quite good. Saline's is far too large -- it needs to be split into at least 2, maybe 3. There's no way a beginning student can get a good foundation in a group of a hundred, and there's no way the teacher can find a struggling student and help them before they develop bad habits.

Chelsea's groups were all very good to outstanding. The Wind Symphony played The Earl of Oxford March, which I have never heard "in the wild" other than when the FCB played it during our anniversary year. SR was concerned about the new middle school band director when she was hired two years ago (having gone to school with her!), but so far she seems to be quite good -- at least her bands are good, which is all I really have to go by.
