Apr. 27th, 2018 09:12 amThe FCB performed at the Motor City Festival of Bands last Sunday. It's the first one we've done in four years, as there have been conflicts and donwannas. Only five bands this year, which is probably about right, as anything more than that and it turns into a four hour concert, which is too long for the audience. It's already an all day affair for band members, at least those who play in the mass band -- we had a couple of people who skipped that part due to other obligations. It seemed to go well, despite less-than-stellar communication from the organizers. (The fact that we'd done all three pieces the week before didn't hurt!)
The FCB didn't have one of the mass band pieces in the folder, and GM said that she didn't have any record of being told that it was on the program. OTOH, it was Stars & Stripes Forever in the same key as the original that we often have in the folders, and it was easy enough to get parts passed around in sections so that everyone who needed music could see it. (I liked the arrangement, if only because it was significantly easier to read!)
The FCB was the only group that brought chimes, and all the community bands used them. I don't know if the other bands assumed there'd be chimes, or were told that Farmington was bringing theirs so they didn't need to.
New music on Monday, as it's only four weeks until the next gig. And three weeks after that to the opening of the Belle Isle Bandshell series. It was announced at the Festival, and word is that the gig is 99% on. (The musical director of the Motor City Brass Band is the chair of the committee responsible for the restoration of the bandshell, so it was an appropriate place.)
In other music related news, one of DB's drum majors is the new (female!) drum major at UMich! I chuckled while reading her comments about the quality of the Chelsea music program, as I've heard many of those comments from EU.
