Mike Lupica points out one of the things that I miss most about the way Ernie covered baseball -- he didn't feel it necessary to talk all the damn time!

Very true. I hadn't thought about it before, but I remember that when Ernie was calling a game, you got to hear the background sounds of the park when there was no action going on.
