Weekend update.
Nov. 11th, 2007 09:36 pmThe CHS football team lost. It wasn't anywhere near as close as last year's game, although the second half was much better than the first half. SR and her friend were safely delivered to the conference hotel in Sterling Heights following halftime. I took advantage of the trip, and tried the route from Farmington that everyone says is 'better' than the way I usually get to rehearsal. It's probably a shorter and quicker route, but as it involves the M-14/US-23 and M-14/I-275 interchanges, as well as I-275, I think I will continue to avoid it for getting to rehearsal at 7pm on a work night. I may go home that way, though.
DB had a good time at the puppet workshop, although he does seem to be coming down with a cold. sigh.
I was wrong about the memorial plaque (which is gorgeous, and huge -- about 6 feet long and 3 feet high). It disappeared between the time that the North Woodward congregation moved out of the building and the St John's congregation moved in. In June of this year, it appeared on the doorstep of the Detroit Historical Society (literally -- they told us that it was on the front porch one morning when they went in to work). It took them a couple of weeks and a bunch of phone calls to track down which church the plaque belonged to -- North Woodward Avenue used to be called Piety Hill due to the high concentration of churches on the street, and while the buildings may still be churches, most of them are no longer owned by the original denominations, much less the original congregations. There were a number of people who grew up in the church at the ceremony, and it was interesting wandering the (huge) church that my mother grew up in (the balcony seats more than my current church can seat in both the sanctuary and balcony). It's a fine example of a North American Gothic Revival church, and most of it is still original (Pewabic tile floors and door lintels, stained glass windows, etc).
Mum called, she's safely back from her trip to Natchez, Mississippi, where they toured a number of lovely ante-bellum mansions 'all rather frayed about the edges'.
