As previously mentioned, yesterday was the Marching Band Exhibition at the high school. I got there, and discovered that I was Lead on Field Security. Woulda been nice to know that *before* I got there, yanno? And the rest of the field crew was rookies, as in they'd never even *been* to one of these shows. So I ran them down the duties of the Field Crew (I really should suggest a name change, as there's no "Security" involved anymore - they added a Gate Check position, and that's really the only place that involves Security). Mostly what the Field Crew does is direct band traffic, and all of the band directors at the show this year have been to at least three of them, so are pretty good at knowing where to go. Heck, most of the drum majors know where to go. :)
The college band came in from the other side of the field this year, and it really is a better path than we've had them doing. That path won't work for the high schools, because that side of the field is their exit route, as it's by the stands and the adjudicators.
The 'theme' this year seemed to be Beatles - half of the bands did at least one Beatles tune in their show, and three of them did Beatles specific shows. They all did "Hey Jude" and "Let it Be", one did "Here Comes the Sun", and one did "Eleanor Rigby". I kept having flashbacks to DBs senior year, when Chelsea did a Beatles show. No band did Queen or Chicago or Journey, so there's that. A couple of the bands did at least half their show with no drill, but there was a surprising amount of pretty good drill; especially when you consider that nobody marched last year, so there's two years of kids who need to be taught how to march. Dexter is still the only band that high steps. There's a reason why most high school bands don't high step -- done well, high step is nice; but done not well it just looks sloppy.
