jennlkjazz singer & pianist. very good. Audience left something to be desired - people (worse, other ushers!) chatting behind me, others tapping (not in time, mind you), and someone attempting to sing along with the encore. People, it's jazz - you will not be able to "sing along" even if you know all the words.
Pianist was very good - threw in a Philip Glass Etude just because he could. Singer has lovely voice and amazing range. Did some original stuff as well as things from the standard jazz chanteuse repertoire (Bessie Smith, Nancy Wilson, Bernstein, Porter).
In the lack of musical history knowledge category, this was a concert featuring a well-thought-of black female jazz vocalist (won awards all over), in Ann Arbor (theoretically a knowledgeable audience), and probably half the audience had never heard of Bessie Smith. Sheesh. I'm not a jazz aficionado by any means, and I know who Bessie Smith was; certainly when given the context of a jazz concert. Don't know as I'd be able to dredge up info if asked 'on the street' who she was, though.
