(Belated) concert report....
Dec. 6th, 2006 09:27 amI went to the CHS Orchestra/Band winter concert on Monday night, skipping FCB rehearsal. And I really should have gone to rehearsal...ghod knows I need the work, after switching instruments a month ago. (oops. But that's the way it goes. Kids' concerts trump my rehearsal, unless it's the rehearsal just before a concert.)
I'll have to give a mixed review. Actually, three of the four groups were pretty good. The Symphony Orchestra is very good (they're going to be playing at the National String Teacher's Conference (or some-such thing) later this year) -- it's obvious that they're both very good and not afraid to work hard. The Concert Orchestra was just not right. I don't know if they're always like that, or if they just weren't ready for the concert. They had to restart one piece right at the beginning, and stopped/restarted in the middle of another. (They really need to listen to each other, rather than just read the music.) I'm assuming that they do much better in rehearsal, because the directors I know would have pulled either the piece or the group before they'd put an ill-prepared piece on stage. (I'm serious--my high school band director cancelled a Winter Concert three days before it was scheduled because we weren't ready for it.)
The bands were both pretty good, although very different. The Concert Band has a bright, brassy sound (which is kind of odd, because their strongest section is the saxophones (according to the band director)), and they play the lighter kinds of Concert Band music. The Wind Symphony has a wonderful dark rich sound, with flutes and oboes floating over the top. I described it to SR as dark chocolate with spices and citrus.
