May. 28th, 2012 05:10 pmWe're into the homestretch of kids in the Memorial Day parade -- DB is now in HS, and we have three more years. I fully expect we'll be there after he's done, simply because we won't know what else to do on Memorial Day morning. (We've been doing this parade for 15 years, since SR was a Daisy in kindergarden.) People are still surprised when the two CHS trumpeters wander off into the trees in the cemetary and play (and echo) Taps after the honor guard has done their 21 gun salute (and there are still flute players who flinch at that). (I remember one year when Michigan Memorial Park had a Memorial Day ceremony in their 'bowl of heroes', and the Legion trumpeter made a mistake in Taps. The high school trumpeter who was supposed to follow him made a split second decision to make the exact same mistake. He said that it was one of the hardest things he'd ever done.)
In other news, the birds are already quite fond of the new waterfall -- there is almost always at least one bathing in the lower pool. And there's a squirrel (or something) that's figured out how to pop the flowers out of the hummingbird feeder so that most of the nectar glugs out onto the ground. I'll have to bring it in at night until I can get a non-swivel hook to hang it on.
