One white peony is opening up, with lots more to follow (red and pink ones, too). There are lots of California poppies blooming, mostly orange but some cream and some orange with yellow edges. The blue and purple cornflowers are adding a nice color contrast. The daisies that I thought were only going to be deep pink when they bloomed stayed the bright hot pink they were showing in the bud. The salvia in the NW flower bed has deep purple flower spikes that are attracting lots of bees. I took a weekend off from weeding, so I've fallen behind. Back to the gardens tomorrow! Ji was very intently watching a crow on the birdbath this morning.

J had a major project over the weekend -- he finally got around to replacing the pond liner. We had to move all the rocks out of the pond, drain all the water (after providing a temporary home for the grass and the seven frogs living in it), and place the new liner. Turns out that the new liner is bigger than we needed, so J and DB dug the pond a couple of feet bigger around before placing the liner. We filled the pond with well water (brr!), added a lot of the rocks for warmth, and returned the frogs to their home before we stopped work on Saturday. Sunday DB and I cobbled together an aerating system so the pond wouldn't get stagnant before the new pump was installed (one submersible pump, the shortest garden hose we had, and a stack of rocks). I heard frogs off and on all day today, so they're not too displeased. (They're hunkered down and quiet now -- it's chilly out there!) New pump & waterfall system to follow, probably this weekend.

Sunday morning we did the church thing, with scheduled tricky alto part, and bonus "the other alto has laryngitis, and I'm supposed to stay off my leg as much as possible, can you songlead?". Then I went off to the northern suburbs for a FCB concert. The chorale we shared the concert with was well out of their comfort zone, and it showed. They're a very good classical/madrigal group, but had a hard time getting into the spirit of the 1960's music. (maybe if they'd not tried to do the Beatles and Ike&Tina; and stuck to show tunes....) It was still a pretty decent show, and we had fun. "they" tell us we'll probably be doing a concert with them again.
