The best laid plans, etc.

jennlkSo, I was thinking I'd stop by ConClave Saturday afternoon, after helping Mum with the house sorting. (Because it'd be fairly annoying to be about 6 miles from a con* and not stop in for at least a little while to see people.) But, plans change. Mum's moving on the 19th. She's having an Open House/House Cooling on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. So then I was thinking I'd see if I could snag crash space Saturday night, so I wouldn't have to drive all the way home and back out again (it's about an hour on the road, and there's no extra beds at Mum's anymore). But then the choir director hands out the piece we're doing on Sunday. Sigh. I can't skip out -- the piece we're doing is one that needs three strong voices, and one of the other strong voices is out of town on business this weekend, leaving us with just three, including me). So I may stop in Saturday evening, but after a day of being charming to my parents' friends, and with the prospect of singing on Sunday, I may just want to go home and rest. (Mum says that any of you are welcome to the Open House. email or call for directions. I know where I'll be.) [*the house I grew up in is 4 miles south of the Northwest (McNamara) terminal at DTW.]
I am not looking forward to all that driving. Plus another trip out sometime during the early part of next week to pick up the last of the furniture (for some reason, she wants to keep the dining room table until after the Open House. Dunno why. ;) ). And a trip out next Friday to watch the movers, and help with the last minute tchotchke moving. And a last trip sometime that weekend for a final sort-thru of what she didn't move. Then the clearers come on Tuesday to clear everything not nailed down, sort it into 'donate, recycle, throw away' and sweep and dust; Mum hands the keys over to the buyer, and the house that I grew up in (and that Dad built (doing much of the work himself) in 1958-60) is out of the family.
In some ways, I think it's good that Dad isn't here for this (he loved that house, probably at least as much as he loved his kids), but still....
