Oy. What a bunch of maroons.... Somebody (on another site) asked what to do with a pound of thermite, and about half the respondants were "OMFG! That's sooo dangerous!" sheesh. I'd let SR light a pound of thermite. Heck, for all I know, she already has -- I know she's observed a number of the test firings, but I don't think she's actually gotten to hold the torch. I couldn't really come up with a good idea for only a pound of thermite -- it's such a small amount :) .

That's okay, I had one of SF's teachers stop me one day when I was at the school asking what I was thinking letting my 10 year old anywhere near liquid nitrogen?!? Was I crazy? That stuff's DANGEROUS! I assured her we were just making ice cream. The look of HORROR on her face was priceless, I should have snapped a picture.

The only sensible use of a pound of thermite I can think of is to use it to ignite a ton of thermite....

It is left as an exercise to the reader to think up a good use of a ton of thermite....

Yes, I do enjoy wearing my "Camp Wannamaka-bigboom" shirt for effect.

They were talking about crystals so I set her up with all the stuff, nicely packed up in ready sized bags to make Borax crystals. SF's teacher things she rocks. If she's learned anything from hanging around GTers if to be fearless of science.

Got anything that needs to be melted-- like... say... a dishwasher? A lb of thermite would be good there.

I think we're going to bring M's science teacher to the sands this year... I think he'll have a wonderful time :)
