Holiday baking. Done! Next up? Shipping!
Dec. 11th, 2019 06:07 pmEU requested Those Cookies in her box this year, so those are made. Also made a batch of cranberry pecan loaf, a batch of Grandma Barker's Apricot Bread, and some Scotch Bars. Most of the Scotch Bars and a loaf of each bread will go to Mum & AC in FL for their holiday celebrations. EU will get some cookies and some of each bread and the treats she's requested. The Scotch Bars are an old 'family' recipe that lots of people who grew up in the 30's have in their family favorites. Grandma Barker's copy has a note at the end 'recipe says these last for weeks, but ours never do'.
I went looking for that recipe this morning, and after looking through my recipe box, I couldn't find it.
I looked in the yellow Woman's Day cookbook that a lot of Mum's cookies came from. Not there.
I dug up Grandma's Boston Cooking School book. Not in there.
Wait! I got Mum's recipe boxes when she moved to NC. Not there. But there's a note in my mother's writing: "Scotch Bar recipe in SME cookbook. Gave original to Jenny 12-02"(*)
Erm. I didn't find it in my box. Look again. What's in this envelope? A-ha! Found it. The recipe sheet is much the worse for wear. It's at least 75 years old, and probably older than that. It's been used thousands of times, probably. It was one of the first cookies that my sister and I made, as they're easy and Dad liked them. J scanned it, and I transcribed it. Then I made the cookies, not following the recipe exactly because we never did. :)
(* yes, my mother wrote notes to herself; especially on things like recipes where she might not want it all that often. She was a librarian.)
