Well, that was a LOT of rain.
Aug. 21st, 2019 10:28 amYesterday evening it started to rumble a bit, so I called the cat in, despite the fact that the weather folk were saying there was only a 30% chance of rain, and the radar showing only a small pop-up type rain cell just to the north+west of us. It didn't rain for about 45 minutes after he came in, but when it did?
We got over 2.5"(6+cm) of rain in just over an hour. Very little lightning or thunder, not a lot of wind, but lots of rain.
The front ditch and the drainage easement had water levels that we usually only see during melt, when the ground is frozen. The culvert under the driveway is the county mandated 8" (20cm), and it was running at full bore with the water still building up behind it -- more than halfway up J's calves. I went out into the easement proper, where the runoff from both sides of the road comes in, and the water was running fast and almost up to my knees. We probably won't need to water the trees in the easement for a while. :)
The water level in the pond was a bit down when the rain started, so it only overflowed a little. It's still much higher than it usually is -- I like to keep a couple of rocks in the middle exposed a bit as frog rests, but they're currently underwater.
The milkweed and hibiscus in the E garden got pretty beaten down by the rain - this afternoon when it's dried out a bit I'll go out and see how much needs to be cut back, and how much I can attempt to stake.
