It was time to move the plants....
Oct. 12th, 2008 10:15 pmThe nice weather recently has led to some garden work.
I spent a couple of days pulling grass out of the front flowerbed, where it was attempting to choke out the lavender, and dead-headed the lilies -- I've got quite enough of them, and decided it was time to cut off the spread (blackberry lilies spread by seed as well as by bulb). I've managed to stay on top of the weeds and deadheading in the beds by the house, except for the area that I couldn't reach due to the huge vine taking over the front porch. There was a burr plant that I couldn't pull, so I cut all the stems off, hopefully before the seeds ripened....
Ever since J put in the new flower beds east of the house, I've been meaning to move the big hibiscus and the columbines out of the bed by the driveway -- they weren't happy there, due to poor soil and crowding from the russian sage and coneflower. I finally decided that J wasn't going to get to it anytime soon, and moved them over yesterday morning. I've got some early bulbs (siberian iris, muscari) that need to go into the new bed as well -- they'll cover the bare spots before the hibiscus & columbines come up without choking them out. I want to get some more wild/botanical tulips for that bed, too, but it may be too late to order, and I've never seen them in a store.
DB went off to sixth grade camp last week, and came home with a cold. (OK, he probably went off to camp with the cold, and it's finally hit him.) He's not going to school tomorrow. So much for getting the last bits of fabric for SR's Senior Night dress (I don't have lining fabric that will work, and the hooks I have are too small for the belt). With luck, I'll be able to get my Halloween costume cut out during the day, and get the lining on my way to band tomorrow. Band Mom, this time -- the MSBOA Marching Band Festival is at (Westland) John Glenn tomorrow night. They've made quite a few refinements to the show from the last time I saw it, and have spent the last couple of weeks straightening out lines and the like.
The new bread machine is just like the old one, only bigger. The loaf is differently proportioned, and looks a little odd, but a sandwich has the same area, which was my only real concern.
