Dec. 23rd, 2006 10:29 pmSo it's two days before Christmas, and I'm finally starting my Christmas baking. Yes, I know it's really late. What can I say...it's not felt like Christmas with temperatures in the 40s and 50s, and we didn't get the kids' pictures back until the 18th. (It was a second try -- DB was being annoying during the first sitting, and he just looked stupid in his pix, and SR looked annoyed. The second sitting was much better.)
In the last couple of days, I've made mincemeat, macerated the fruit for fruitcake (I make a "Methodist" fruitcake without alcohol, and while it is better aged for a couple of weeks, it's certainly edible the next day), tried a new cherry/cashew cookie (good, btw), and made the apricot bread and the cranberry/pecan bread for Christmas Day at Nana's. Tomorrow, between church services, I'll actually make the fruitcake; as well as a ginger/lime variant of a sugar cookie, some gingersnaps, chocolate pepper snaps, 'Those' cookies; and fill the dates with peanut butter.
I also went to the store today. Not something I usually do this close the Christmas, but SR had some tutoring, so I was in AA with a couple hours to kill. Meijer at 11am wasn't bad. Then I went to Briarwood, and while it was getting crowded it still wasn't bad. The parking lot was full, but it wasn't all that hard to get around inside, although the actual buying lines were getting long. Then I picked SR up, and we stopped at Lowe's for more stuff for the basement -- and a kitchen light to replace the fluorescent tube fixture that came with the house (that was not in the plan, but we saw it on display and they had one left...). Then we went to a different Meijer for milk (by now it was 2:30 pm). It was -much- busier then.
Tomorrow is more baking and wrapping. I haven't started wrapping yet. Ooops. Fortunately, there's only one service tomorrow evening. Well, fortunate in that I'll have more time to wrap, but I expect that the church will be absolutely packed to the gills. In a usual year, we fill the church to 80%+ for each of two Christmas Eve services, but 'they' decided to have only one this year. I argued for two Christmas Eve services, but came out on the losing side. (of course, that also means that I only have to hit that high G once, not twice.)
