Aug. 3rd, 2006 09:49 amOk, so I've discovered one problem with having a well-respected surgeon do my back. His office has had to reschedule my 12 month follow-up twice because he's been called in to do emergency/urgent surgery. Originally scheduled for this Friday, they called on Tuesday to reschedule to Wednesday because he had an urgent-but-not-emergency surgery, and Friday was the only day the OR was available. Wednesday morning, they called to reschedule again because he had an emergency cervical fusion come in from the ER. It's probably just as well. I was stiff and creaky and sore yesterday, and my right foot was feeling fuzzy and weird.
Berzerker was much better than last year. I was much more mobile, in much less discomfort, and was actually able to wander out to the thermite pile on Sunday morning. As I expected, walking around on the Sands was not easy, and I really had to watch where I was stepping...uneven and slippery surfaces are the things that cause me the most trouble, and the Sands are both. I actually used a flashlight once it got dark, and stayed close to the pavilion area, where the terrain was more even. I did take a comfy chair, and something to do that would keep me in it for 25-30 minutes at a time, so I was able to rest and relax as necessary.
We had an extra kid along for the trip....SR's best friend has been wanting to come to Berzerker with us for a while, and this year she was able to convince her parents that it would be OK. She seemed to enjoy herself, and learned a bit.
We learned the importance of double-checking equipment before leaving. We had lent out our big tent to SRs swim team for swim camp last fall, and hadn't checked it when we got it back. It's an oldish spider tent, with 'permanent' rods for the main room of the tent. Whoever took it down at swim camp had decided that the spider was supposed to be removed. OY. I'm still not sure how they managed to do that without breaking or ripping something. So it took J and the girls nearly an hour to put up the tent on the first night, because they had to figure out how to get the spider back into the tent without breaking or ripping anything. (I think the only reason they were able to is that we had a couple of smaller tents with us that would have provided enough sleeping space for the night, and could get to Marquette to get a replacement. :) )
