I often forget just how far north Minneapolis is in relation to me -- just latitude-wise, it's three or four hours straight north (to traverse city/grayling level), and that area of MI has a different weather pattern than down here at the border.

(To be fair, I did most of my trips to Mpls from Houghton, and it's south from there....)
